Spokane County's Board of County Commissioners approved a contract with Spokane Neighborhood Action Programs (SNAP) to distribute $5,900,907 in a Commerce Eviction Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) grant.

The EARP grant aims to help prevent evictions by providing for past, current and future due rent for families who have limited resources and great need, according to a press release from Spokane County.

Funds will be provided on a county-wide basis to both the unincorporated areas of Spokane County and the cities and towns within Spokane County. Agencies, property owners and tenants in the eligible areas can receive up to three months of rental assistance from the program.

Spokane County is also finalizing a contract with SNAP Housing Counseling to provide more than $600,000 in mortgage and utility assistance to homeowners in the unincorporated areas of Spokane County and the 12 cities and towns that participate in the Urban County Consortium.

Program funds are being provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to support Coronavirus Response Guide, according to the press release. This represents the first distribution of HUD's CARES Act funding. It is expected to provide an additional $500,000 in rental assistance for residents.
