Mary Kuney and David Green, who are the Spokane County Commissioner candidates, view county finances in different ways.

The governor appointed Kuney, a Republican officeholder, who is also a former state auditor, in 2017 after her predecessor resigned. She beat Republican Rob Chase in 2018.

Green, a Democrat, is a tax accountant who lost in 2018 when he ran for Spokane County treasurer.

Kuney said commissioners will soon approve a 1% increase in property taxes. She adds that the increase is needed to provide services for the community.

“You can be a fiscal conservative, but you still have to be smart and do what you need to do to provide the services that you need to provide,” Kuney told Spokesman.com.

Green says that commissioners need to “think outside of the box” when discussing the budget crisis. He says that reducing the number of people that are incarcerated would be a good start.

“Now is the time to embrace new concepts,” Green told Spokesman.com.
