Spokane County, Washington, saw a double-digit increase in COVID-19 cases in the month of May, which is attributed to an outbreak in the county.
The announcement was made on May 23 when a 19-case increase was reported by the Spokane Regional Health District, according to KHQ. At that point, the county had reported 469 positive cases.
The increase didn't reflect a community spread and was cited as an example of how people can spread the virus when they congregate. Dr. Bob Lutz, Spokane County Hospital Officer told KHQ the public must remain vigilant.
The Philadelphia Macaroni Company plant is a prime example, according to KHQ. A total of 31 positive cases were reported as of May 23.
"When we investigate positive cases, the result of reaching out to those who came in close contact is an increase in testing and possible discovery of more positive cases, many of whom may not have symptoms. They now know to self-quarantine to help keep others in our community health," Lutz told KHQ.
As of May 29, 570 Spokane County residents have tested positive for the coronavirus.
