City road crews initiated a full residential plow in Spokane Valley on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 11, to clear existing snow and ice off the streets.
Warming temperatures on Saturday and early Sunday have left significant snow, slush and ice on some residential roads. Street Superintendent Shane Arlt said, "some neighborhoods on the east end of the city may not need fully plowed, but we will drive the roads and treat with salt where needed."
There are 624 lane miles to plow, and it can take more than 48 hours to complete a full residential plow. Residents can track progress via an online map (which is updated during business hours).
Residents are asked to park vehicles in driveways and remove garbage cans, basketball hoops or other objects that may limit the ability of plows to push snow off the street. If you are driving, please give our crews plenty of room to work and do not try to pass the plow.
Residents and business owners are also asked to remove snow and ice from sidewalks to make it safer for school children, older adults and those with mobility concerns. City municipal code requires the removal of snow (when more than 3 inches) from residential and commercial sidewalks within 48 hours after the end of a storm.
The city will not plow privately-owned roads, and Trent Avenue (SR 290) and Pines Road (SR 27) are plowed by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
