American actress and Spokane native Sydney Sweeney recently donated $12,000 to provide meals to needy area residents, inspiring others to do the same.
“I hope I’m able to provide a little holiday relief for both the restaurants, who are really struggling right now, and the homeless, who will be facing a really, really tough winter,” Sweeney said, The Spokesman-Review reported. “And even if it’s just a little, I hope that others can find their own way to give back, too.”
Sweeny’s donation helped provide approximately 400 meals to 12 homeless shelters through the Extend the Love meal program, The Spokesman-Review reported.
The actress’s donation spurred other local groups to join in the spirit of giving and generosity. LifeWise Health Plan of Washington, Washington Trust Bank and Spokane County matched Sweeny’s donation, gifting an additional $36,000 to Extend the Love, The Spokesman-Review reported.
“During this year when the pandemic has forced us to adapt our own restaurant services, we are especially grateful for this opportunity to work with the sponsors, donors, restaurants and organizers of Extend the Love,” Lisa Diffley, executive director for Women and Children’s Free Restaurant, said in a statement, The Spokesman-Review reported.
Extend the Love will facilitate the delivery of meals beginning the first week of January. The program is scheduled to run through February, but organizers seek additional donations to extend the program.
